A Sad Day

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of the Mitts. Formerly known as Cocoa, the Mitts became a part of our family 12 1/2 years ago. Always cute, generally neurotic, and extremely obese, the Mitts was a fixture in our hearts as well as our home. Unfortunately, she was unable to handle the stress and anxiety that resulted when we brought Elli home, and she began using every portion of our carpeted flooring as her own personal litter box. As a result, she was gradually restricted to less and less of the house, until she was finally confined to the basement.

We tried many vet visits (and chats with my veterinarian brother, Russ) in order to keep her, because we just couldn't see having her put to sleep. However, despite all our efforts, she started even using the cement floor in the basement as a litter box, so it had become clear that we would never be able to allow her in the rest of the house again. To make matters worse, she was limping again in multiple legs, indicating that her arthritis had gotten worse again. Add in that she seems to be losing some hair (once the mats were combed out, since she is too obese to clean herself anymore), and we realized that it was time.

So, today, Doug took her to the vet to be put to sleep. In lieu of flowers, please give your pet his favorite treat, because that's what the Mitts would want. :-)
