Ophthalmologist Appointment

We had Elli's latest pediatric ophthalmologist appointment today. After attending the AFI conference, we felt armed with lots of information and lots of questions. :-) You never know how specialists will handle all those questions - some get horribly annoyed, and others seem to be fine with it. Thankfully, this doctor handled the questions really well, and answered them all very patiently. He also answered most of the questions in ways that aligned with the information we'd received at the conference, so we feel like he knows aniridia as well as we could have hoped.

I'm thankful to say that we received another good report. There is still no evidence of keratopathy (corneal scarring), cataracts, or glaucoma. He also said her exotropia looks better, so she won't require surgery to re-correct that, at least not at this time. I believe that is a direct answer to prayer - many of us had prayed specifically that a 2nd surgery would not be required. So, thank you for praying!

He also did not think that the genetic testing is as essential as some of the other specialists have indicated - he said that it's not infallible enough to rely upon the results, so we'd still do all the same treatments that we're doing now, which is probably why the insurance denied it. That was an interesting perspective, so now we're discussing whether we should go ahead and do it, or whether we should just wait the 2 years and get the research results back.
