As mentioned in a previous post, April (our vision consultant) told us that it is important that Elli be exposed to lots of different textures and materials. As a result, she's got lots of new "toys" that aren't your typical plastic toys.

Elli's favorite "toy" at the moment is a light box, shown here. We will apparently use this for many purposes as she gets older (like learning how to color, since the marks will show up better against the light), but for now, Elli uses it as a climbing object. She will often leave her other toys and crawl over to the light box to climb on top of it and play with toys on it.
The light box has all kinds of interesting films that can be placed over it to give it a different look. This one shows the checked film, but there are spots, solid colors, stripes, and even an attachment that allows things to spin.
Some of Elli's favorite things are the rings that go on top of canning jars. (Thanks, Nana, for the great idea!) Give her a large metal bowl to clang them against, and she can entertain herself for a long time! She also loves the sound the rings make when they spin on a wood floor - she will sit and toss them down over, and over, and over....just to hear the noise.

Just proves you don't need a lot of expensive toys and gadgets to have fun and entertain yourself. I love the lightbox. I had one as a child and LOVED it. In fact my mom recently found it and sent it home with me for my kids. So now I'll have one here when Elli comes to play.
